Well, the big news of the day is that they fortified Evan's breastmilk today. True to form, Evan wasn't having it. I told the day shift nurse that I was nervous about it, as it took only two feedings last time for him to show intolerance of the fortifier. And sure enough, feeding number two with the fortifier, he didn't eat well. The nurse said that he took a sip, and acted VERY hungry, but as soon as it hit his tummy, he got gassy and upset. Then, he had several large vomits, and only took 25 cc that feeding. He's CONSISTENLY taken all 60 cc for the past 24-48 hours. The doctor came in and looked at him, and called him a "little stinker". So, Evan is now off of his fortifier and back on straight breastmilk. While I didn't walk with the doctor today, when we spoke on Friday, she said the plan was to try the Enfacare and if it didn't work, to give a couple days rest with straight breastmilk, then Nutramigen. So...I'd venture to guess that is the plan with Evan, but I'll find out more tomorrow.
Alec, on the other hand, is doing great on the EnfaCare. They have moved him from 22 calorie to the 24 calorie, to try and get him onto the growth curve (he's WELL below the growth curve, below the 1 percentile). He is such a good little eater. He eats all 50 cc, and the nurse is now going to start putting 55 cc into his bottles. Little piggy! He gained another .8 oz today too!
We also got the talks today from the nurse about circumcision, Hep B shots, bringing in Evan's carseat for eventual carseat test, and also about the need for Alec to possibly use a car bed for the first little big. Quick explainations...circumcision...is obvious, and they do it before the go home. Heb B shot, they do when they feel the babies are stable enough to get it (which they are). The carseats...the seats we bought are 5-22 lb, so Evan will be able to ride in his, but Alec will be too small. Evan will get a 90 minute "carseat test", where they put him in the carseat to watch their stats, be sure they don't desat, etc. Alec will be too small likely, and will need what is called a carbed, which is a bed type carseat for babies under 5 lb. They will show us how to use it when the time comes, if he can't ride in his seat.
All the talk about the above has us a LITTLE excited......this has come from our NURSE though, not the doctor. I will not get TRULY excited until SHE breathes the word. Actually, Evan can't come home till his feeding stuff gets sorted out, so WHO knows.
